A good leader is someone who focuses on developing his own organization, through continuous improvement and respect for people, with a vision that the organization will become the best in its field. In other words, the main task of the modern leader is to develop and secure a system and culture that works. Developing culture takes time, we need to change behavior and develop new ways of working. To get there, we need to train on key skills throughout the organization, and in this development, management must take the lead. The top executive is the driving force, and all middle managers must learn to follow simple systems, working methods and patterns in everyday life.
In books on improvement processes and streamlining organizations, we usually see that focusing on processes is what produces good results. Nevertheless, we rarely experience seeing descriptions of processes for how we develop such a culture. The processes in an effective organization are a result of the organization's ability to see opportunities and evolve over time. The more efficient the organization becomes, the better the processes will be. This is an interaction in which internal working conditions become more satisfactory, motivation increases, results improve, owners' dividends develop positively and the contribution to society increases.
For example, if we look at the Norwegian women's handball team where Sven Tore Jacobsen stood out in the 1980s and said that we would become the world's best handball nation, everyone laughed at him, but he had a vision and strong faith in the team's potential. If we can be the best cross-country nation in the world, we can also become the best handball nation in the world," he said. Marit Breivik and Thorir Hergeirsson followed up with even more involvement of the team towards a common objective and development of a new culture. The Danish iron women were defeated and Russia with their former dominance and their strong coach, Yevgeny Trefilov, had to see themselves beaten by a team, which from their point of view was composed of far too small and light athletes from small Norway with a completely new style of play. From being a B nation, Norway over the course of two decades became a leading women's handball nation in the world. We can learn a lot about modern management of successful sports coaches.
Pillars of good leadership are respect for people and continuous improvement. This is about building a culture where employees represent the core of our expertise. The experts in our processes are the ones who work in the processes daily. It is they who must be built up and trained in learning to see, and find solutions, and it is the operational management that is the driver of this development. To achieve this, the manager must ensure that systems are established in which all employees are actively involved in everyday life, by actively involving themselves, being curious about ideas from the employees, humble for their competence and patient in testing out their ideas. Lean is not a set of quick-fix solutions, Lean is fundamental cultural change in a long-term process.
